You know, with the release of the sneak peek for ‘Story for Steven’, I’ve been seeing a whole lot of stuff about Greg Universe on my dash.
Before now, I honestly had no idea how much hate the poor dude got before this sneak peek.

I think a lot of the fandom forgets about the fact that Greg may live in his van, but the dude is the owner of the car wash. He doesn’t just hang out there all the time. Seriously, if you think the gems are the ones financially supporting Steven, I’m pretty sure you’d be wrong. I really don’t get where people think he’s poor?

And then we have the part of the fandom that apparently thinks Greg is a deadbeat dad? Did y’all forget about the episode ‘House Guest’? All Greg wanted was to live with and spend time with Steven again. And I will bring special attention to the fact he said ‘again’, when referring to living with Steven. Meaning that Steven lived with Greg before he moved in with the gems.
And then there’s the episode ‘Lion 3: Straight to Video’, which supports that fact. The front of the temple did not have Steven’s house built onto it while Rose was pregnant in the video. Meaning that there was nowhere for Steven to live with the gems when he was a baby, thus Greg was the primary caregiver to the little dude.
Not to mention, uhm, could you really imagine the gems with a human infant? Yeah. Cute fanart aside, I really couldn’t see it.

Plus, who do you think taught Steven to sing? Play guitar? Who has been the most forthright with Steven about his mother? Greg. He’s the one telling Steven stories about when he was a baby (’Maximum Capacity’), and going along with Steven’s crazy shenanigans (‘Space Race’), and filling him in on the whole ‘oh, hey, the gems are aliens who invaded earth, just an fyi’ (’The Return’), where the gems were and still are, dancing around the subject like there’s no tomorrow (’On the Run’).

All in all, I’m just honestly surprised anyone didn’t/doesn’t like Greg. Putting aside he was a cutie nerd when he was younger, the dude is honestly just a sweet teddy bear who loves his son. And, y’know, given that his kid is part alien and goes off on magical adventures all the time and has special powers? Dude’s surprisingly chill.

All the love for Greg Universe, man.
